The Geopier® Rammed Aggregate Pier™ System was introduced in the United States in 1988 and was almost immediately recognized as a significant innovation in foundation improvement. In 1993, the Construction Innovation Forum (CIF) presented its NOVA Award to the Geopier Rammed Aggregate Pier System for innovation in intermediate depth foundations.

The NOVA Award was instituted by the Construction Innovation Forum in 1989 to recognize innovations that have proven to be significant advances that have had positive, important effects on construction to improve quality and reduce cost.

NOVA Awards have been awarded to advances in all areas of the construction industry, including innovations in the construction process and in materials, design, detailing, fabrication, equipment, procurement, contract administration, management, labor relations, training and safety that improve the construction process. The NOVA Award has also recognized projects for their innovative concepts and methods.

In evaluating the Geopier System, the CIF considered its use by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Key Field National Guard Hangar in Meridian, Mississippi. The Army Corps selected the Geopier Rammed Aggregate Pier System with structural steel uplift anchors instead of traditional concrete piers or driven piles. Geopier uplift elements constructed in the very soft clay were designed to resist a maximum design uplift load from wind equal of 420 kips at each footing location. The tested uplift capacity at the Key Field site exceeded design by 10 tons.
